|The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of the Year Awards, which honor entrepreneurship and innovation in Canada, announced that MHS Assessments CEO, Dr. Steven Stein is a finalist in the category of Health Sciences for 2015. The Ontario winners will be announced at the Ernst and Young Awards Gala in Toronto on October 29, 2015. Since 2012, MHS has partnered with the Toronto Kiwanis Boys & Girls Clubs, a charity that provides a safe haven for children to develop social, behavioral and educational skills. Each year MHS raises and donates over $25,000 and 1600 employee hours. Additionally MHS provides internships in different areas of the business for two young adults from the club.

MHS has been about innovation ever since we started back in 1983, with the computerization of several psychological tests and diagnostic interviews. The Apple II computer was relatively new and a significant step towards automation of many of our regular work tasks. Over the years we have continued to innovate ways to make the work of assessment more efficient and accurate for the professionals we serve.
Not all of our innovations have been about technology. We created the QuikScore™ form starting with the Conner’s Rating Scales in the mid 1980’s. We noticed that it took a lot of time for psychologists to score, break into factors, and compare test results to normative data. The QuikScore™ greatly simplified this process saving psychologists a significant amount of time as well as improving accuracy.
We developed one of the first commercially available continuous performance tests – the Conners’ Continuous Performance Test™ (Conners’ CPT™) – for widespread computerized testing for attention deficits. The use of computers for direct assessment of clients was relatively new and somewhat controversial at the time. However, the Conners’ CPT™ has evolved over the years and has proven itself invaluable in the study of attention problems in a wide variety of diagnostic conditions. The current Conners Continuous Performance Test 3rd Edition™ (Conners CPT 3™) and new Conners Continuous Auditory Test of Attention® (Conners CATA®) have been a tremendous success since their launch and provide many innovative features. They set a new standard with a large and representative normative base, as well as the practical and easy to read reports.
MHS was also among the first test publishers to provide online test administration, scoring and reporting. We are already into our third generation of online assessment with a wide variety of clinical, public safety, and organizational assessments available.
We have also pioneered a number of new areas of assessment. The Conner’s Rating Scales™ (CRS™) were the first measures associated with attention deficit disorder. The Children’s Depression Inventory™ (CDI™) was the first measure of its kind. The Hare Psychopathy Checklist™ (PCL-R™) was the first measure and remains the gold standard for psychopathy. The Level of Service assessments (LSI-R™) were the first commercialized risk assessments in public safety. The Emotional Quotient Inventory® (EQ-i®) and Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test™ (MSCEIT™) were pioneering measures of emotional intelligence. And we continue to update and standardize all of these tools to keep them the best in their class.

Innovation is a popular buzzword that you hear in every business context. Phrases like ‘innovate or die’ pervade the business literature, but what does it really mean to innovate, and what does innovation look like in the psychological assessment industry?
There is much tradition associated with the psychological assessment industry with many products in their third, fourth and even fifth revision. Even the roots of psychological assessment go back much further than most people imagine and while most people recognize the seminal work of French psychologists Binet and Simon as the first psychological assessment, the roots can actually be traced back to the Song Dynasty in China (960-1279 AD).
Innovation for the sake of innovation rarely makes sense in any industry. However, at MHS we look at innovation as going beyond the product and consider innovations in processes that help improve the way products are developed as well as innovations in the delivery and packaging of products that improve the way customers experience and interact with our products.
Over the years MHS has brought many innovations to the table. We were the first test publishing company to use the carbonless paper format found in our handscorable QuikScore™ forms and now used by most other companies. We have also been a leading innovator in the development of online assessment platforms launching our MHS Online Assessment Center in 1999.
We have also brought you many innovative products over the years, including the Conners 3rd Edition® (Conners 3®), Autism Spectrum Rating Scales™ (ASRS®), and Comprehensive Executive Function Inventory™ (CEFI®). In 2014 we released Conners Continuous Performance Test 3rd Edition™ (Conners CPT 3™) and Conners Continuous Auditory Test of Attention® (Conners CATA®) which allowed us to use the latest technologies in our products. For 2015 we will be launching the Conners Kiddie Continuous Performance Test 2nd Edition™ (Conners K-CPT 2™). Now with an expanded age range from 4 to 7 year olds, the Conners K-CPT 2™ evaluates attention deficits and neurological functioning. Also new for 2015, published by Psychological Consultancy Ltd. and distributed by MHS, the Risk Type Compass™ is an instrument that assesses the different ways in which individuals perceive risk.
