Technical Information

The development of SHQ–R is based on data collected from over 30 years of research on conventional and deviant sexual behaviors. A combined total of 899 male sex offenders over the age of 18 form the normative base. The SHQ–R Technical Manual covers mean age, education, I.Q., and marital status, and also offers a descriptive analysis of the evolution of the normative sample throughout its evolution.

Reliability and Validity
The SHQ–R has strong validity and reliability. In terms of reliability, results indicate that the majority of scales have satisfactory internal consistency. The SHQ-R has two built-in validity scales, and validations of the SHQ-R have found the instrument to be relatively free from bias of age and education. Confounding variables were examined, including age, intelligence, education, marital status, and test-taking attitude in the form of naïve lying, malingering, and psychological defensiveness. Detailed data are presented in the SHQ-R Technical Manual including:

  • Reliability
  • Confounding variables
  • Correlation with MMPI-2
  • Correlation with other versions of SHQ-R
  • Factor analysis
