Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test:
YRV Researcher’s Guide

David R. Caruso, Ph.D.

The MSCEIT-YRV is a youth version of the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test designed to assess emotional intelligence (EI) in youth ages 10 to 18 years. Specifically, it measures the capacity to reason using feelings, and the capacity to enhance thought with feelings. As opposed to a self-report of one’s emotional skills, this ability based scale measures how well people perform tasks and solve emotional problems. The MSCEIT-YRV provides measureable results that are useful across a variety of settings including research, educational, clinical and correctional environments.

Features and Benefits

  • An objective assessment of EI, that uses cutting edge veridical scoring
  • Easy to use online scoring and administration for automatic and immediate results
  • Decrease method bias in respondents' scores by using a variety of tasks to assess EI
  • Results you can trust with a normative sample of 1000 youth spread across different age groups

Scales & Forms

The MSCEIT-YRV is based on the four-branch model of emotional intelligence. As such, it is the first measure that produces valid scores for youths in each of the four central areas of emotional intelligence.
  • Perceiving Emotions - the ability to identify emotions
  • Facilitating Thought - the use of emotions to aid and foster ideas
  • Understanding Emotions - knowledge about emotions
  • Managing Emotions - the capacity for emotional regulation
